We decided on a last minute weekend trip to Amsterdam and because of low-availability and high-prices we decided not to stay near the city. On a whim we chose to stay near Amersfoort which is roughly 30 miles East of Amsterdam. We had no idea what was in Amersfoort, but to our surprise this little town was packed with character. The streets were lined with fallen leaves and the scent of fresh bakeries, what is better than fall and fresh bread?
We stayed on the cutest ranch with chickens, cows and horses. The owners ran the farm and sold their own milk and eggs at their own store on the property. In the mornings we would wake up with the sunrise and walk in the country side or in the town center and it was a great break from the busy streets of Amsterdam.
Places to eat:
Logement de Gaaper, Hof 39, 3811 CK Amersfoort– Café Restaurant & Hotel
This café restaurant is at the bottom level of a 19th century hotel which offers comfy rooms, when available, as well as an all inclusive breakfast for hotel guests. We stopped in off the street and enjoyed eggs & bacon (a plus in Europe), parfaits, breads, water and coffee all for 9 EUR a person. Our dog was also allowed inside which is a major plus when the weather outside is less than “patio weather”.
The Blueberry, Hof 21, 3811 CK Amersfoort– Brunch Restaurant
Unintentionally we stumbled into this “American Style” brunch restaurant which offered fresh fruits, pancakes, waffles and smoothie bowls. Don’t forget to order one of the seasonal pumpkin spice lattes. Basically our American dreams came true in this quaint little restaurant in the most unexpected town.
